Cooking falafels on a camp stove - fun and easy

Preparing and cooking tasty falafels on a camp stove is fun and easy. Just make up the mix with a little water and cook them for a minute or two in a small fry pan. Here is the recipe that you will find in my new tramping food book, called "Fast And Light". Try these and many more easy camping foods.

Falafel mix prepared with water

Falafel with Sweet and Sour Sauce (serves 2)

This is a good vegetarian option. The recipe uses the basic falafel patties and by adding a sweet and sour sauce (or other sauces), creates a really tasty meal. You can also vary the texture of your falafels, by mixing half falafel with half polenta.

1 cup Falafel Mix (make 10 patties)
1 packet of Sweet and Sour Sauce mix (125g)
2 tablespoons Olive Oil
1 tablespoon Pine Nuts (garnish)

DW 245g

Mix the Falafel with ½ cup of cold water and stand to one side for 10 minutes.

Shape the Falafel mix into small balls or patties and lightly fry both sides for about 1 minute in olive oil, until crisp and brown. You may need to do this in several batches, so keep the cooked patties warm.

Arrange on serving plates and pour over sweet and sour sauce mix (hot or cold) and sprinkle with pine nuts.

New tramping food book - Fast and Light

I am delighted that my new tramping cook book "Fast and Light" has now arrived from the printers and is available to anyone interested in outdoor cooking in the New Zealand wilderness. While it has been designed mainly for trampers, especially those seeking light weight food options for extended and multi days tramps, it is also very useful for other campers who want a few good cooking ideas.
